Medicare, VA care and TRICARE For Life in Pensacola
Escambia has a large military community around NAS Pensacola, and many of the 10,546 people in changing plans are veterans or military retirees. Almost all of them are in PPO plans, and about 7,600 had a Part B premium reduction.
VA health care
Medicare and VA care are separate. You can use both. The VA doesn’t bill Medicare, so plan networks matter only for care outside the VA.
TRICARE For Life
If you have TRICARE For Life, you need Medicare Part B to keep it. TRICARE For Life works with Original Medicare, and many retirees don’t need a separate drug plan. If you’re thinking about a Medicare Advantage plan, ask us how it would work with TRICARE first.
Plans without drug coverage
9 Escambia plans for 2027 have no drug coverage. They’re built for people who get medicines elsewhere, like the VA. If you don’t have other drug coverage, avoid them.

Escambia has 28 plans, so every detail counts
Escambia has fewer plans than South or Central Florida: 28 open to anyone, from 7 companies. Returning plans also became more expensive in a bad year: 10 of 25 raised their out-of-pocket limit, and the typical limit went from $6,750 to $7,150.
If you see doctors in Alabama, add them to your list. REMCARE is licensed in Alabama too, but a plan sold in Escambia has its own network, and doctors across the state line may or may not be in it.

Questions from Escambia County residents
Why are so many Escambia plans changing?
Several large PPO plans aren’t returning in Escambia under the same plan number. About 10,546 people, 27% of the county’s Medicare Advantage members, are affected.
I have TRICARE For Life. Do I need a Medicare Advantage plan?
Usually not. TRICARE For Life is designed to work with Original Medicare Parts A and B, and you must keep Part B. Some retirees choose an Advantage plan for extra benefits; talk with us before changing anything.
Can I use the VA and a Medicare plan?
Yes. They’re separate. The VA covers care at VA facilities; Medicare covers care outside the VA. Some veterans choose a plan without drug coverage because they get medicines from the VA.
How many plans are there in Escambia for 2027?
28 plans are open to anyone, from 7 companies, and 21 have a $0 monthly premium.
I see a specialist in Mobile. Will my plan cover it?
Only if the specialist is in your plan’s network, or you choose a PPO that covers out-of-network care. We’ll check before you decide.
