Big change, few choices

A third of Gainesville-area Advantage members are in plans ending or changing

Among Florida counties with 50,000 or more people on Medicare, Alachua has the biggest shake-up for 2027. About 7,406 residents, roughly a third of the county’s Medicare Advantage members, are in plans that won’t return under the same plan number. Most were in two PPO plans with a Part B premium reduction. And Alachua has only 16 plans open to everyone, from 3 companies.

With so few Advantage choices, Original Medicare with a Medicare Supplement is worth a real look here. Fewer than half of Alachua’s Medicare population uses Advantage plans already.

If you want any doctor

Medigap plus a drug plan lets you see any doctor who takes Medicare, including at UF Health, with no network.

If you’re a veteran

The Malcom Randall VA Medical Center is in Gainesville. VA care and Medicare are separate, and you can use both.

Questions

Questions from Alachua County residents

Why is Alachua so affected for 2027?

Two large PPO plans with a Part B premium reduction aren’t returning in Alachua under the same plan number. About 7,406 people, around 33% of the county’s Advantage members, are affected.

How many plans are left in Alachua?

16 plans are open to anyone for 2027, from 3 companies. Counting special needs plans, there are 38.

Is UF Health Shands in network?

It depends on the plan. Give us your UF Health doctors and we’ll check each 2027 plan’s network.

Should I switch to Medigap?

It’s worth comparing. Medigap has a higher monthly premium but no network, which matters with so few Advantage plans here. If your plan is ending, you may be able to buy certain Medigap policies without health questions for a limited time.

I’m a veteran in Gainesville. What should I know?

VA care at the Malcom Randall VA Medical Center and Medicare are separate. Some veterans use both; some choose a plan without drug coverage because they get medicines from the VA.

Can you help me from Gainesville?
